Let Subcontractors Update Their Own Activities

The person closest to the work usually knows its status best. The Trade Updater role lets superintendents and subcontractor foremen report progress on their own activities without being able to change logic, other trades' work, or anything else in the schedule.

What a Trade Updater can change

Only on activities they've been granted:

  • Percent complete
  • Remaining duration
  • Actual start and actual finish
  • Planned start and planned finish

Everything else is read-only to them. They can see the rest of the schedule for context.

Set it up

  1. Invite them as a Trade Updater. On the home page, open Members, enter their email, choose the trade_updater role, and click Invite. This uses a superintendent seat. See Invite and manage team members.
  2. Grant them activities. Open the schedule, select an activity, and open its comments panel. Under Trade grant, choose Grant trade updater…, pick the person, and click Grant. Repeat for each activity they own.

Review what they report

Trade Updater changes go into the live schedule like any other edit, and CPM recalculates. Other members are notified of schedule changes in the app (and by email, if they've turned that on). See Notifications and email digests.

It's still good practice for the scheduler to review progress before the monthly update is issued. See Record progress and update the schedule.

Alternatives

  • To show a sub the schedule without letting them change anything, send a share link. It's free and needs no account.
  • To give someone read access to everything, make them a free Viewer.
