Import Troubleshooting

"Native .mpp import isn't enabled"

Save the file as XML in Microsoft Project (File → Save As → XML Format) and import the XML. See Import from Microsoft Project.

The file type isn't recognized

Supported files are .xer (Primavera P6), .xml or .mspdi (Microsoft Project XML), .xlsx (Excel), and .csv. PMXML import isn't supported. Export an XER from P6 instead.

The import fails because of a cycle

The schedule has circular logic: A drives B, which drives A, possibly through several activities or a calendar quirk. Nothing is imported. Find the loop in the source tool (P6's schedule log lists it) and fix it, then import again.

"Too many imports; try again shortly."

Each person can import 10 files in 10 minutes. Wait a few minutes.

The import is blocked because activities are in use

The project has expenses or delay notices attached to activities, and importing would replace those activities. Import into a new project instead.

"Importing a file needs a connection."

You're offline. Imports run on the server. Reconnect and try again.

The finish date doesn't match P6 or Project

Almost always calendars. Check:

  • Workdays and hours per day on the project calendar
  • Holidays, especially across a year end
  • Activities on their own calendars (the Cal column)

Then look at the Import trust report for remapped constraints or relationship types. See Work calendars, holidays, and weather days.

Activities lost their logic

Links to activities that aren't in the file, such as external relationships to other P6 projects, aren't imported. Recreate them with cross-project links in a program. See Subprojects and programs.

I imported into the wrong project

Importing replaces the schedule. Re-import the correct file into that project, or import the original back if you have it.

Still stuck? Email the file to [email protected] and we'll take a look.
