Import from Microsoft Project

schedule.construction imports Microsoft Project schedules saved as XML (the MSPDI format). Native .mpp files aren't supported yet, so save as XML first. It takes a few seconds.

Save as XML in Microsoft Project

  1. Open the schedule in Microsoft Project.
  2. File → Save As.
  3. Set the file type to XML Format (*.xml).
  4. Save.

If someone sent you an .mpp and you don't have Microsoft Project, ask them to save it as XML.

Import it

  1. Create a new project or open the one you want to fill.
  2. File ▾ → Import schedule and choose the .xml file.

Importing replaces the project's entire schedule. Use a new project if you want to keep what's there.

Check the trust report

The Import trust report lists anything dropped or remapped. Project-specific features, like effort-driven task types, manually scheduled tasks, or resource leveling delays, may not have a direct equivalent in a CPM schedule. Check the critical path and finish date against Project before you rely on them.

Manually scheduled tasks

Microsoft Project lets tasks be "manually scheduled", ignoring their logic. schedule.construction always schedules from logic, so those tasks may move on import. If they do, it usually means the logic in Project was incomplete. Fix the links rather than adding constraints.

Export back to Microsoft Project

Export ▾ → MSPDI downloads an XML file Microsoft Project can open (File → Open, then choose the XML file). See Export your schedule.
