Resources, Histograms, and Resource Leveling
Resource loading answers "do we have enough crews for this?" and feeds cost into earned value.
Add resources
Project tools ▾ → Resources. Under New resource, enter:
- Name, for example "Crew A" or "Tower crane"
- Kind: labor, equipment, or sub
- Max units/day: how many are available each day
- Cost / unit / day: used for budgets and earned value
Click Create. Edit a resource later to set its calendar and availability window.
Assign resources
In the same panel, under Assign to activity, choose the Activity and Resource, enter Units/day, and click Assign. The Assignments list shows them all with Remove.
See the load
- Display ▾ → Detail panel → Histogram opens a bottom pane on the Gantt with daily load per resource. Days over capacity are highlighted, with each resource's peak and conflict count.
- Analysis ▾ → Resource load gives a one-line summary and opens a printable histogram.
- More views… → Team shows a row per resource with its activities as bars, plus an Unassigned row.
Level resources
Analysis ▾ → Level resources… shifts activities later until every resource is within capacity.
Options:
- Within total float only. Never delays the project finish. Some conflicts may stay unresolved.
- Use task + assignment priority. On by default.
- Preserve started / in-progress activities. On by default.
- Max over-allocation. How much overload to tolerate.
- Horizon end. Only level up to this date.
- Resources. Leave empty to level all of them.
Click Preview to see how many activities would move and how far the finish would extend. Then Apply. Clear leveling removes every leveling delay and the constraints leveling added.
Leveling is a what-if as much as a fix. Consider running it in a what-if scenario first.
